Sort of like if Stephen King wrote The Road

This genre-bending post-apocalyptic book is part horror story, part cat-and-mouse thriller, part modern western, and part survival tale.
Seventeen-year-old Elka can hardly remember her life before she met Trapper. For a decade now, this gruff man has been like a father to her. The two of them have lived on their own in the middle of nowhere—on the fringes of a decimated society. Trapper has taught her how to live like an animal, hunting for food and surviving in the stark wilderness.
Then one day, Elka sees Trapper's face on a wanted posted in a nearby town and learns that he's a deranged killer. She flees north in search of her real parents, but it won't be an easy journey. Along the way, Elka encounters dangerous people struggling to get by in this new world—and not only that, but she has the sneaking suspicion that she's being stalked by Trapper. Worst of all is the nagging feeling, as she confronts her own dark past, that maybe she's just as inhuman as he is. Maybe he taught her too well.
The Wolf Road is a haunting story about a feral young girl reckoning with her inner darkness and coming to terms with her own humanity. It's sort of like if Stephen King wrote The Road. While I questioned some of the author's narrative choices, I was thoroughly captivated by Elka and enjoyed taking this journey with her.

The Thrilling Moments of the Novel Are Not Worth the Grisly Ending

The book has several promising moments, but at the end, "The Wolf Road" is too grisly and despairing for this novel to succeed. Elka is a feral girl-woman raised for most of her life by a man she calls Trapper. They live in the cold reaches of what must be Canada a few years after some global war. A chance encounter with the law sets Elka free of Trapper driving her into the wilderness where she encounters other humans and human relationships for the first time in her life. She desperately flees the gruesome past life she and Trapper had and hopes for redemption for past acts. This book has lots of excitement, blood, and thrilling moments, and because of those, I found the book held my interest. But the novel, which could have succeeded without resorting to its ghastly outcome, left me wanting a less distasteful resolution. While I grew accustomed to it, I tired of Elka's method of speech, a silly patois I can only suppose the author used to emphasize her feral nature. I also tired of Elka's repetitious "philosophizing" about the moral rectitude of the wild. Finally, what is tantamount to the final outcome is given right at the very start of the book; the reader knows what happens throughout the entire novel greatly diminishing the excitement of the ending. This book will likely hold your attention should you read it. I just cannot recommend it.

Mediocre

This is a post-apocalyptic novel set in near future British Columbia. Apparently, a series of major power conflicts has led to a nuclear exchange, ravaging the landscape and returning society to a 19th century frontier existence.
The protagonist of the story is a young woman, given the name Elka, who is raised from age seven by a sociopathic hermit of sorts. Trapper raises Elka and instructs her in all the skills needed to survive in the wilderness, but Trapper is not what he appears.
Elka’s goal in life is to travel north to the Yukon gold fields and reunite with her parents, who abandoned her years ago to the care of her grandmother (who was ultimately killed). The story revolves around her journey north, and the various adventures attendant with the journey.
As post-apocalyptic tales go, I’ve got to say that I’ve read much better (The Road, The Stand, A Canticle for Liebowitz). I can’t say that I felt much empathy for the main character, and found her dialogue to be annoying and overly “hillbillyized”. Most of the characters are relatively one dimensional stereotypes and most of the action is pretty predictable. Not terrible, just not very good.
