Don't keep this book hidden! Go get it!

A few months ago, I read The Girl Who Never Was—the first book in this series—and gave it five stars. I loved Selkie the narrator’s voice as all the irreverence was happening around her, and I loved the use of my hometown of Boston as a safe-haven for magical creatures. The book tied up its primary conflict but kept it open for something bigger to happen in the sequel. Let’s see how well it continues the story.
Like before, let’s look at the beautiful cover first. I love how it’s an inversion of the first book’s cover but with the primary image focusing on Benedict Le Fay—the titular Boy With the Hidden Name. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the book covers of a serial so inventively, awesomely, and easily tied together. Kudos to author Dorset’s cover designer(s) and marketing team.
I try to be spoiler-free in my reviews, but I’m reviewing a sequel, so be prepared that there will be mention of events in the first story.
When we last left Selkie Stewart in Boston, Ben had left her to seek out his mother in the Unseelie Court. Selkie is saddened by the way he left her, especially in light of the prophecy that says: “Benedict Le Fay will betray you, and then he will die.” Has he betrayed her already by leaving? And if so, is he going to die? Selkie loves him, and she’s heartbroken, but before she can even try moving on, very bad things start happening in Boston. The Seelies are going to attack soon.
You see, there are other prophecies at play here. One says that the four faeries of the seasons (of which Selkie is the fae of the autumnal equinox) will defeat the Seelies. Another says that one of those faeries will go to Avalon and guarantee the Seelies’ victory. Regardless of which one plays out, Boston is in trouble so Selkie and her family and friends need to find the other three faeries. The problem is that only Ben’s mother knows the identities and/or whereabouts of the other faeries, and getting into the Unseelie Court isn’t easy.
Led by Will Blaxton the Wizard, Selkie, her best friend Kelsey, and Ben’s cousin Safford start their journey. The travel to the underground city of Goblinopolis and enlist the aid of the flamboyant and seductive Erlking—perhaps the most outrageously fun character in the series. There they venture to the Unseelie Court, where they encounter Ben’s mother. Though not as dementedly wicked as Selkie’s Seelie mother, Mother Le Fay is enigmatic and cunning in her own way. Then they return to Boston where things are awful, so they try to find the other fae, only to take an important detour to Iceland. Along the way, there are tasks to accomplish and important objects to obtain—and some other items that Selkie arbitrarily picks up (her unique ability that I noticed in the first book).
The ever-changing setting with the series of tasks made this book feel like an Otherworldly edition of the TV show The Amazing Race. The book was fast-paced, and with the fate of the worlds—both the Thisworld and the Otherworld—at stake, maybe the quick trips around the worlds work thematically, but I didn’t feel settled in any location long enough to make them very memorable at the end, unlike the fewer locations in the first book.
Also, in the first book, I loved how Selkie was an unaware narrator about the Otherworld and her role in it. Here, she knows a little more, and she’s pivotal in the final battle, but more often than not, other characters are getting her out of situations, thus making her a little passive at times. The other faeries aren’t so much found—a pair of them simply arrive—adding to some of this passive nature of the plot.
Still, the humor and irreverence that I loved about the first book are still here, and it is a very strong sequel. I guess that’s maybe the problem with sequels, especially when you really enjoyed the first part. I’m not saying that this book doesn’t live up to the first part because it’s a very good ride; I’m just saying I thought the first book was exceptionally strong.
In the end, however, I loved the idea that there were conflicting prophecies. Our destinies aren’t fully written and can go a variety of ways based on our actions. That idea resonates with me, and how the conflict is resolved is cleverly tied into that theme. And Ben’s hidden name matches all the fun of this series perfectly. All things considered, this is a solid book, and I won’t keep it hidden that The Boy with the Hidden Name deserves its FOUR STARS.

of Names and Other Things

I finished a two part teen series that was refreshingly fun to read. It started with The Girl who Never Was and ends with the Boy with the Hidden Name by Skylar Dorset. Along with such bylines as "cross between Neverwhere and Alice in Wonderland" and great cover art I had to read the Otherworld series.
This is an entertaining series about fey creatures, and the humans who live around them in and around Boston. There are evil elves, sexy goblins, ancient wizards, giant Corgis, dragons, cave horses…and a little bit of love. Our main character is a young girl Selkie (and yes I do know that is an Irish creature who wears a seal skin and No this girl is not one of them) a half troll half fey girl in the middle of a prophesy to end or possibly save the world. Ben LeFey is her love interest, a Seelie boy who has a lot of power and loves (we think) Selkie. Names in this series have power, like in most high fantasy series, name something and controll it. (Hence the no Name theme in the book titles).
Book two starts right after book one and Selkie is trying to get over how who she thought was her one true love Ben has just walked out on her to find his Mom. Then the sky goes black, and bells in Boston start to explode out of their towers. It turns out the Seelie (think pretty evil elves) have blotted out the sun and plan to take over the Earth and remove all the humans who they view as an annoying disease on the planet. But to do that they need to invade Boston, Oh, and kill Selkie. Book one had a bit of a pacing problem, but book two is nonstop action. And it is well paced action at that. I found this to be a fantastic read with humor in the right spot, funny characters, and a story that while somewhat predictable, threw enough twists and laughs to make it a fun journey.
I highly recommend this series to readers who don’t want _another teen love story_ that revolves around pretty people and their supernaturally perfect lives. Yes there is love, but it is secondary and provides more humor than romance. I mean the Goblin King’s line “I am really good at seduction” is used as a punchline. And besides Ben is fated to betray and then kill Selkie. Not the stuff of most teen romances these days. So if you want to go on a lark and don’t mind hopping a train to the underground, join Selkie, Ben, and all the other crazy cast of characters on an adventure to save or possibly destroy the world…

When I read author Skylar Dorset’s The Girl Who Never Was a handful of months ago I remember being compelled to fall in love with her take on faeries. The genre has always been one that I rarely find myself reading in and her story and world were impeccable. I absolutely adored reading about the main character Selkie, discovering the truth about her family, and learning about this secret world of faerie. Not to mention that the way the last novel ended with the prophecy of ‘Benedict Le Fay will betray you and then he will die’ had me reeling. Would he seriously betray Selkie? Would he really, really die? All of these questions and I figured that I would get all of the answers in this sequel.
The Boy With the Hidden Name takes place where The Girl Who Never Was left off. Selkie alongside a cast of characters who include her aunts, best friend Kelsey, the wizard Will and Safford. As the plot thickens Selkie finds herself public enemy of the Seelie Court and seeks out a Goblin monarch. With Ben absent, Selkie stands in the middle of a battle where she is the most wanted person in the faerie world, considered to be the prophesized girl who will change the world. But as Selkie and her friends travel to find the three fays who will save Parsymeon and the Otherworld, she begins to wonder if her mother’s prophecy for Ben is true and if she will ever see him again.
I liked that The Boy With the Hidden Name gave us a further glimpse into Dorset’s world of the faerie. Not only does the story take place where it left off but we are also plunged headfirst into new, darker branches of the faerie world that Dorset has created. A world where not only is the Seelie Court still wicked and warped beyond all belief but a world where Selkie might have to glimpse into the Unseelie Court which is ten times worse. We get a better look at all the branches of the world that Dorset has created in The Boy With the Hidden Name and even discover that faeries ride on… giant corgis? Welp, it is fantasy.
I will admit that since reading The Girl Who Never Was I have gone through plenty of books. I have forgotten the names of certain characters, how things worked, etcetera. The sequel did have its positive sides in terms of giving readers a reminder of what’s going on. I knew that the novel took place after the first, I knew that there were prophecies and naming, and I knew that Selkie was on a mission. But there were important details from the last novel that I did have to do a bit of re-reading and hard-thinking in order to piece the current novel together entirely.
What caught my attention in The Boy With the Hidden Name was how different the pacing was compared to The Girl Who Never Was. I remember that most of The Girl Who Never Was had its ups and its downs but The Boy With the Hidden Name was non-stop. The adventure never ended as Selkie alongside her friends fought to see their journey through to the end. The stakes were raised and again, that prophecy about Ben was stuck in my mind. I couldn’t wait to see how that would play out. All in all, I was surprised with the novel’s ending. It wasn’t at all what I expected it to be or imagined it to be.
I would recommend this series to readers who are fans of the faerie genre, readers who are looking for a fantasy-adventure read and to readers who are devoted to the will they/won’t they relationship trope. They’ll definitely love the romance between Selkie and Ben. An interesting new take on faerie that was an experience to read.
