Entry into the Cisco certification world has never been easier or more clear

As many know, Wendell Odom has been writing Cisco certification books for several years now and this latest effort continues the high standard we have come to expect. With the recent changes to the CCENT / CCNA curriculum, this new volume does a great job of taking the reader through the material from the beginning to the end in a logical, understandable, and meaningful manner. After reading the volume cover to cover (800+ pages) I can say that Wendell does an excellent job of introducing the material in manageable chunks, and not overwhelming a newcomer or diving too deep on the technical (read: boring) subjects too soon.
PROs
- Don't underestimate the value of the supplementary material. Between the videos, the samples questions, and the sim you have some great tools at your disposal to help gel the material in your mind and see it from a slightly different perspective.
- Chapter 11 has a particularly good description and approach to IP address management and design that is easy to grasp.
- Subnetting, subnet masks, and binary math is left until later chapters when it makes sense to introduce them rather than bludgeoning the student with them right away and potentially putting them off the entire subject matter.
- The DIKTA (Do I Know This Already) quiz answers are listed that the bottom the page immediately following the quiz. This may seem like a minor improvement, but for those of us who actually do the quizzes and verify our answers it saves a LOT of page flipping to the back of the book where they were previously located.
- The use of actual SWITCH and ROUTER output with relevant highlighting and text explanations does a great job connecting the reader to what they will actually see on a device.
- Using "real" public IP addresses in the examples where it makes sense aids in understanding relevant topics like NAT and ACLs.
- IPv4 and IPv6 are given almost equal footing in the learning, not simply an IPv6 chapter added at the end because they author felt they should. This is more representative of what a up and coming CCENT will be expected to know and does a good job of preparing them for it right away.
- The book and examples are almost without exception correct, not rife with errors as some texts from Cisco Press in the past have been.
CONs
- Some of the supplementary material will only work on a Windows PC, so Mac users are not able to take advantage of it easily.
- I am not sure I agree with the books opinion that access to real equipment is not needed - I still feel that one needs to touch and feel a SWITCH and ROUTER to really become proficient, even at the CCENT level (remote access would work as well).
In summary I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to enter the Cisco certification world, or those simply wanting to gain an understanding of IPv4 and IPv6 without any prior knowledge being assumed.

An in-depth technical manual

I haven't had this book for very long, but so far I'm impressed. Odom tries, and succeeds, to immerse you into computer networking. Some have suggested the writing style used to achieve this is dense, and I can somewhat appreciate these concerns, but I ultimately disagree. Odom doesn't want you to have a superficial understanding, he wants to pass along genuine, in-depth knowledge of the technologies. This is most evident in his explanations; instead of just explaining the basic working of various protocols, devices, etc, he makes clear the caveats and stresses the importance of the easy to miss things. This isn't a book for just passing the CCNA, it's a book for understanding it.

Must have for CCNA studies

Please note: I am reviewing this book (e-book version) as a CCIE and not as someone who is preparing for the exam. I have taught CCNA classes for the Cisco Academy and helped others with their own preparation for the exams.
I wish this was one of the books I used when I studied for my CCNA almost 6 years ago. I took the 640-802 which is the set of books prior to this one.
The content is very complete and laid out quite well. This book provides the reader with more than enough information to understand the topics being covered in each section. It has definitely been expanded from the previous versions and editions. Subjects that I have seen individuals struggle with have been broken out into their own chapters and sections.
I really like that how more attention has been given to the IPv4 addressing chapters. Subnetting is topic everyone seems to struggle with. Even though the amount content for this section seems to be about the same as earlier versions, breaking it into separate chapters makes it much more manageable for the reader to study and retain.
The updated diagrams and configuration samples do a fantastic job of assisting the reader in understanding the topic being explained in the text. The addition of color to the diagrams and configuration samples help a lot, but this may be an e-book thing.
A couple of other things I like about this book: the Do I know This? answers are at the beginning of the chapter instead of at the end of the book (explanations are in the back though which is OK), the Final Review chapter gives a lot of great advice on actually studying for and taking the exam.
The only things I don't like about this book is it is missing the open ended questions and the hundreds of subnetting problems that I used. These may be on the DVD, even if they are not, I recommend purchasing the physical book or premium edition, whatever you need to do to get the DVD content. Reviewing the appendixes for the content you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't get it.
