If You're Studying On Your Own, Steer Clear

This offers very little in the way of explanation. If you truly struggle with math or even with specific concepts (like geometry) this book is not for you. A small paragraph is provided to explain something and if you don't grasp it from that, you are stuck referring to other books or using the web to research it. Also, I found a few errors in the Answers section. This could definitely add to the confusion for anyone that's not an A+ math student. I was very frustrated by how often I had to refer to something else for the information I needed.

That being said, this book seems like it would be well-suited to a GED prep class with an instructor explaining before the work is being done. For my purposes, this book was a waste of money.

Not a fan.

I'm not a big fan of this book. I bought this because I was taking a class that required it, but as far as a teaching guide, I don't think it's very good. It's ok, but it doesn't do much explaining which if you don't have any experience doing these kinds of problems can be an issue. If you want a teaching guide I'd look elsewhere, especially for the premium price.

Edit: My original review of this book (above) will remain untouched but I'd like to address something. I've gotten 2 unhelpful marks on my review of this book, and I don't know what more people want me to say. I'll say this, this book pretty much cost me $25. and I didn't take much from it at all. The explanations are very brief, and it's also all over the place with it's teachings. It jumps around from pre-algebra to algebra 2 to algebra and back again and so on. So again, it's not a good teaching guide, period end of story! I honestly think the unhelpful marks against me are either from publishers or fans of the book because no one in my class (20 or so students) liked it. On the other hand I bought this book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071824979/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (McGraw-Hill Education Preparation for GED Test) for $14. and actually took a lot more from it's math section. Also, after my classmates saw and looked over my McGraw-Hill book more than a few went ahead and bought one for themselves. True story! This book is lucky I gave it 3 stars, but I figure if someone has experience with math then they might feel it's actually a solid book. But not me, especially not for the price. Done.

steck-vaugn ged books for 2014

When you use this book, You should all so use the student workbook first. It will tell you how to do it better. The student edition mathematical does not let you do that much work. The workbook lets you work on 2 to 3 pages. The other book only let you work on 1page. The books I love. they will help you with the GED.

Great review book!

I understand why some people have been upset with the occasional error (spelled "String" as "Sting), but this book has been a huge help in reminding me how to do a lot of these math problems. I am only halfway through and already know that my math score has increased by at least two time, maybe even three times since my last practice test.
This is the perfect book if you haven't done any math problems since your freshman year of college.

Maybe it was my mistake but I bought this book hoping for a math review that would help me with the GMAT math content. This book is very basic, for people that did not know much math in high school, it does not enter the math level that you will see in the exam, it is much more basic.

I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

I'm not a science fiction kind of gal, but I really enjoy this author (go check out her Loki series I Bring the Fire Part I : Wolves (A Loki Series) - the first one is FREE!). So, I was game to read something outside of my norm. I'll admit, my default is to want some romantic tension without it being a I'm-going-to-beat-you-over-the-head kind of thing. The teaser for the book kind of hints at some romance, but I'll let you know: it's totally there, subtle and building and complex. It's a part of the plot without it being the all consuming focus - a writing style in which Gockel shines. Overall, a very well written and engaging read with a solid plot, diverse and compelling cast of characters, lots of heart, and NO CLIFFHANGER! (It's a trilogy, so obviously the overall plot isn't resolved, but the immediate story arc resolution leaves the reader eager but not frustrated waiting for the next book.)

H/h: Noa has dang near all the heart and James has dang near all the physical power which would make for a great team IF their priorities weren't in near constant conflict. James would like Noa to Not Die. And Noa? She wants to save her planet which ends up getting her shot at - a lot. Noa is a great heroine - clever and bold with enough human flaws to make her a 3 dimensional character. And she makes inappropriate jokes when she's in danger - which is often. Homegirl has to escape from a concentration camp, accept help from a dude who's a bit "off" but looks suspiciously like someone she used to know Really Well, AND try to save half the population of her planet from the other crazy half. NBD, you guys. James is a different sort of character. The reader isn't completely sure what is going on with him - and neither is James. This is a plot thread that gets teased into the light towards the end of the book, but won't resolve in this installment. His own personal situation meant I wasn't as able to connect with him as I was with Noa or other characters in the book, but this didn't detract from my engaging with the story. I will say, James really starts to come alive the further you get into the book.

Supporting Cast: The first half of the book is mostly Noa and James, so any comic relief comes from her banter. However, in the second half Gockel introduces some characters that had me laughing out loud. The fact that she named a sex-bot character 6T9 makes my left-of-center heart happy. Gockel demonstrated in her I Bring the Fire series that she has a talent for writing secondary characters with depth making the reader fall in love with (or have genuine hatred for) nearly everyone she trots into the spotlight. Archangel Down is no different and I can't wait to see more from them. One of these characters has autism (which is, personally, close to my heart) and the way this plays out in the story done so well - not in an easy, comic relief sort of way, but in a poignant and plot-driving way. Brilliant.

Setting: The world building is phenomenal. I didn't get bogged down with cumbersome info dumps; everything is revealed organically through the story. This, for me, made the fact that it was science fiction enjoyable instead of a burden. Gockel has some serious religious, racial, and political tones she is tackling, but nothing struck me as preachy or heavy-handed, just part of the atmosphere.

Style wise, if you like Lindsay Buroker's Emperor's Edge series, you'll like this.

Bottom line: This is a no-brainer. Buy it, read it, enjoy. And Share!

Failure Is Not An Option

This series must be read in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to find out what is next for Noa&James in the next book!!!

Noa came home to visit her baby brother Kenji... Unfortunately she ended up in a concentration/forced work camp instead of spending quality time with her favorite sibling. She thought life was at its all time low when her husband was murdered. Too bad she was wrong. Knowing she must escape and rescue her brother is the only thing that keeps her going. Why has her homework devolved into Nazi like persecution and insane antitechnology religious zealotry? Why are they railing about heretics and demons as well as aliens? What caused this horrific mix of violence and genocide?

James woke on the planet with no clear idea of how he got there or what transpired before that. All he knows is he has a driving urge to find Noa and save her from those who would harm her. His past is fuzzy and unreal. Why does he feel an overwhelming desire to gain her trust? Why is he always seeing black whenever it seems like something will end her? Will they escape with their lives and sanity intact? Will they be able to find a way off planet to expose the atrocities of the camps?

***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy a little first contact in their futuristic dystopian sci-fi fantasy action adventures with a dash of romance and a heavy serving of horror :)

SciFi With a Human Context

As usual author C. Gockel has managed to create an alternative reality without losing the ability to draw readers into the vital humanistic connection so many other SciFi authors lose in their blind rush to show technical savvy. All our identifying emotional characteristics, anger, fear, self-doubt, love, despair, and humor are on display as the colonists of a new world a forced to realize they are not alone in the Universe after all. I would have given 5 stars, it rates such for originality, if not for couple storyline jumps that had me backtracking to see what I might have missed -- understandable considering the diabolical plot twist built into this entertaining read. OK, 4.5 Stars

Very interesting book on anatomy and evolution

I read page after page. I was at the last page when I recongnized.

This book is a cream of crops which came out from years of dedicated work by an outstanding researcher and educator of anatomy and evolution.

There are many traditional anatomy books which explain structure but sometimes readers were not satisfied with questions not explained by the books. Dr. Langdon faithfully applied sciences related with human evolution and explains human body structure and function from the unique perspectives of evolution.

If combined with traditional clinical purpose anatomy books, you will have very clear and precise understanding of anatomy.

I had the benefit of being one of Dr. Langdon's students many years ago.

The depth of his understanding of anatomy is difficult to fathom.

He never used a single note to guide his teachings. He didn't need them. He was capable of drawing any structure throughout its evolutionary development from memory.

The title of my review says it all: first rate. This book honors anatomy and evolutionary biology on every page. Nothing makes sense in biology, we are reminded, without evolution, and the author never loses sight of that truth.

It doesn't do this play justice to say that much of the action takes place in a hospital room around the bed of a comatose woman. On the other hand, it may explain why critics have been so impressed. From unpromising material--standard urban settings, stilted exchanges, missed cues, private jokes, half-finished sentences--Diana Son has crafted a subtle, moving drama about vulnerability and risk. When Callie, a twentysomething New York traffic reporter, promises to take on a cat owned by Sara, "some friend of an old friend of someone," she arranges to leave quickly after Sara drops off the cat so that she doesn't get drawn into a dull evening with a stranger. Callie is an expert at avoiding conflict, which serves her well in the city. Sara, on the other hand, has willingly left her job at a Quaker school in St. Louis to teach third-graders in the Bronx. Although both are "straight" women, they circle each other warily, nursing an unspoken attraction. The playwright's choice to shuttle back and forth in time, between the hospital room and police station and the early days of Callie and Sara's friendship, lends a bittersweet quality to even their lightest exchanges, allowing us to wonder, along with the two women, whether the violent outcome of their single kiss makes it a bad idea. I am in love with this play

Always do your research on what you want. I am in love with this play. The story of 2 females discovering their love for each other is so real. It portrays the protagonist's real frustration of realizing/actualizing a sexual orientation that she tried to deny. It shows the devastation and dangers of accepting ones sexuality and showing it in public. This story takes on the dynamics of heterosexual, bisexuals and lesbian relationships. I bought this as 1/10 plays that I was reading to pick from to pitch to my artistic director at Scene One Theater in JCMO. Well I selected this as my final choice for my 2nd directorial project and a potential production in the 2016-2017 season! I'll let you know if it's chosen.

Would love to see this produced locally!

This is a moving story, that definitely had me engaged and caring about the characters, where their respective lives came from, intersected, and were going.
Speaking for myself, the non-linear treatment of time/narrative was not problematic in terms of the narrative - in fact, i think it served as an excellent dramatic device (canʻt say too much more without needing to say "spoiler alert"). However, as another commenter noted, it does pose technical challenges directorially, in terms of scene and costume changes, although i am sure that there have been very effective solutions.
imho, the lead character, "Callie", definitely has an nice psychological/emotional arc to convey, less so Sara and George. The rest of the characters generally fulfill narrative functions, although they all provide pointed insights into how we all view, value, move into, and out of relationships.
Personally, i loved the story, and would love to see it produced locally.

I'm, giving this one star because the book had a printing error that made it unreadable. The last 20 pages of the book are a repeat of the previous 20 pages, which means that a significant part of the play is missing. My daughter needs this play for a class, and this copy is unusable.

Will the methods of detection be adequate and timely enough to avoid catastrophe? It is often said that one of the major purposes of futures research of the sort presented in this book is to provide lead-time to decision makers and the decision process. In the case of lone wolves we have some lead-time. We hope it will be used to reduce the threat we see in front of us. The book includes 200 pages and is based on informed speculation by experts and the results of detailed research about chances for lone wolf terror escalation and prevention. It describes some future weapons and means of detection. It explores the changIng role of cyber crime and the role of the Internet and reviews some approaches to follow if people with malintent are detected. It discusses the global legal and ethical situation. Finally, it offers some suggested policies that seem to reduce the chances for large scale catastrophe. It includes reference to over 100 cases of successful or thwarted attacks. About the Author
Theodore Jay Gordon is a futurist and management consultant, a specialist in forecasting methodology, planning, and policy analysis. He is co-founder and Board member of The Millennium Project, a global think tank. He formed the consulting firm The Futures Group, was one of the founders of The Institute for the Future, and a consultant to the RAND Corporation. He is a frequent lecturer, the author of many technical papers and author or co-author of several books dealing with space, the future, life extension, and scientific and technological developments and issues. He is the author of the Macmillan encyclopedia article on the future of science and technology. Dr. Yair Sharan, a Col(ret) in the Israeli army, is currently the director of an Israeli consulting group that focuses on security and technology. He has been a senior associate researcher in Begin-Saadat Center for strategic studies (BESA) in Bar Ilan University in Israel. He was the director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Technological Analysis and Forecasting (ICTAF) at Tel Aviv University, and was a senior consultant to the Israeli Ministry of Science in 1992–1993. Dr. Sharan served as Israeli Science Counselor in Germany Dr. Sharan is co-director of the Israeli Node of the Millennium Project, a member of the World Future Society and has been a member of the EU Foresight Expert Group. Elizabeth Florescu is Director of Research at The Millennium Project and is co-author of the annual "State of the Future", the report "Environmental Crimes, Military Actions, and the International Criminal Court", the "Analysis of the UN Millennium Summit Speeches", several articles, and invited reviewer at specialized magazines. She has been one of the principal investigators working on the monthly environmental scanning reports for the US Army Environmental Policy Institute, assessing worldwide environment and new technologies-related issues that might trigger future changes to international regulations with potential implications for the military. Ms. Florescu serves on committees and forums addressing issues related to S&T, environment, security, international regulations, ontology, and knowledge management.
