Everything old is new again in this purposefully tacky cookbook based on the food served at the 67-year-old Polynesian chain restaurant. Siegelman gives a little history of the establishment—Trader Vic (aka Victor Jules Bergeron) began with a tiny beer shack on a dicey corner in Oakland, Calif., and went on to invent the mai tai and build what became a $50-million empire of company-owned and franchised restaurants—and then it's party time. Siegelman (Firehouse Food) covers pretty much everything readers need to know to throw a swingin' shindig in the tropical paradise of their own living rooms. Tips on setting the mood—"dim the lights," "decorate the guests," add "tiki touches" like grass skirting for tables—precede the book's biggest section, which covers food and drink. Every major tropical beverage (alcoholic and non-) is here—daiquiris, mai tais, punches, etc.—and Siegelman gives a snappy introduction to each, interspersing the cocktail recipes with quotes from Vic himself (on the mai tai: "Anybody who says I didn't create this drink is a dirty rotten stinker"). Ninety-five drinks later, a chapter on food appears, with suggestions for 35 pupu platter dishes, finger foods, salads, buffet-style entrees and desserts (some of which call for Trader Vic's bottled sauces). While there are certainly more high-end books on entertaining Polynesian-style available, none beats this one's authentic kitsch.

A Lot of Fun!

I tend to approach restaurant cookbooks with a degree of caution, as I've found in the past many can lack adequate testing for the home kitchen. It seems the writers often don't scale down the ingredients properly; one of most glaring instances I've seen is a book that called for 3 tablespoons of cayenne for a small batch of BBQ sauce...

It's nice to find that (at least so far) this is not a problem with the Trader Vic'd Tiki Party book. I've tried several recipes and they are all excellent. As another review pointed out, the onion marmalade recipe lacks directions on how to prepare the onions (I think you could chop or slice them), but that really isn't too big an error. If you are interested, these are the recipes tried so far:
Chicken Curry--excellent (be sure to do the condiments! My daughters particularly liked the bananas.)
Jalepeno Cheese Balls--frying always makes me a little nervous, but oh my these were good)
Savoury Dipping Sauce--Tasty
Wasabi Remoulade--Superb! (I used store bought crab cakes)
Hawaiian Pork--Really good (had trouble rolling them, so just served in slices topped by:)
Onion Marmalade--delicious (I suggest thinly slicing the onions)
Peanut Dipping Sauce--Very Good (used it with vegetables; note it is not sweet)
Mai Tai--I'm not an expert tropical drinks guy, but it tastes great to me!!
So, so far so good with this one. When I read the reviews, it seemed a lot of people had read and enjoyed the book--and it is a very enjoyable read--but had not tried the recipes. I have tried a few and am very pleased! Note there are dozens of drink recipes also, along with many, many tips on how to throw a fun tiki party. I've found the suggestions really inspiring.
One little negative note: there is a good deal of pushing Trader Vic's products, which I find a little exasperating. It simply might be the nature of a cookbook like this. In the end it's a pretty minor quibble.

Neat piece of history - may Tiki never die!

Matter of fact, we should try to re-capture some of the good of the 50s - (one man earns the family income, jobs are protected, overseas business is tariffed or taxed, the rich have up to a 90% tax break)

A book like this is a good basic layout for having your own Luau - Americanized with loving cultural appropriations. Good fun time and professional level quality recipies but easy to prepare with simple setup. Basic cooking/home bar equipment. The liquor could end up quite a scavanger hunt, so those drinks should be planned, but again tons of giant party mixes!

We bought this as a gift for friends of ours after they had loved the drinks that we had made them from our copy. This is a great book containing traditional and non traditional cocktails both single serving and bowl sized. We have yet to find one that we have not enjoyed and the party food that is included in the book it simple and tasty.

There are great images and plenty of back story to make this book a lot of fun for those who love a cocktail of an evening

About the Author
In his breakthrough works of channeled literature, author and medium Paul Selig has recorded an extraordinary program for personal and planetary evolution. Selig was born in New York City and received his master's degree from Yale. He had a spiritual experience in 1987 that left him clairvoyant. As a way to gain a context for what he was beginning to experience, he studied a form of energy healing, working at Marianne Williamson's Manhattan Center for Living and in his own private practice. In the process, he began to "hear" for his clients, and much of Selig's work now is as a clairaudient, clairvoyant, channel, and empath. Selig has led channeled energy groups for many years. Recently featured on ABC's Nightline, he is the subject of the short documentary film Paul & the Word, and is also featured on the A&E/Biography channel series The UneXplained. He often appears on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory. Paul's recent and upcoming workshops include The Kripalu Center in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, The Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York, and the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. Also a noted playwright and educator, Paul serves on the faculty of NYU and directs the MFA in creative writing program at Goddard College. He lives in New York City, where he maintains a private practice as an intuitive.

At the outbreak of war James McCudden was an engine mechanic, but within four years, by sheer hard work and devotion to duty he and risen through the ranks to be a highly decorated Major: a fighter pilot with 56 official aerial victories to his credit. But his success as a fighter pilot was only part of his worth. Unlike many of his contemporaries McCudden studied the tactical aspects of airfighting, applying them to what he saw as his most important duty as a Flight Commander: to minimise the casualties suffered by his Flight. He was tragically killed in a flying accident in July 1918, flying to France to take command of a squadron. The story is supported by 275 rare photographs.

About the Author
Alex Revell is an internationally acknowledged researcher and author writing of the RFC/RAF in the First World War. He has had had many articles published in specialist aviation magazines and the journal of Cross and Cockade International, of which he is a founding member. His previous books include two biographies, the Vivid Air and Brief Glory, both recently republished, and his history of 56 Squadron, High in the Empty Blue, by the same publisher as The Happy Warrior: Of the highly acclaimed High In The Empty Blue, one reviewer wrote: A classic. He could well have written the best specialised study in the field of World War One aviation literature. I suspect this will be the best book I ever get to review. A retired engineer and a jazz musician of international repute, Alex Revell lives in Cornwall with his wife Linda and four Burmese cats.

A must read!

“The Happy Warrior” is another wonderful book by Alex Revell. As with his previous books, “High in the Empty Blue: The History of 56 Squadron, RFC/RAF 1916-1919”, “Brief Glory: The Life of Arthur Rhys Davids, DSO, MC”, the author weaves together official records, and logbooks, with family letters, diaries, and remembrances of contemporaries to bring a more complete picture of these young men who served in the Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force during the 1914-1918 War.

In telling the story of James McCudden, possibly the finest pilot and patrol leader of the First World War, the author allows us to catch a glimpse of the man and add context to his accomplishments. To quote directly from “The Happy Warrior”:

“To put McCudden’s superlative record still further in perspective it must be remembered that not only was he still a young man, but that he achieved his success in a Britain in which social class was still a dominant feature, which barred many from advancement in both civilian and military life. In an autocracy, rather than a meritocracy, James McCudden’s progression through the ranks in eight years, from a boy bugler in the Royal Engineers in 1910 to that of Major, with his country’s highest decoration for bravery, was a remarkable achievement.”

The author’s research is in depth and beyond question, and provides many details of McCudden’s life and especially of life in the early RFC/RAF. Alex Revell writes from a perspective that few modern authors could possibly have: he actually knew some of these men who fought in the skies above France and interviewed them extensively during the 1960’s. As with “High in the Empty Blue”, their memories and first-hand knowledge not only provide clarity to the historical record, but bind the past to the present in extraordinary ways, and bring this distant history to the here and now. Lastly, the Appendices and the Endnotes are a treasure trove of additional information – so much so that I found myself reading the book from back to front! This is a must read for anyone interested in James McCudden and the RFC/RAF in the First World War.

An angry, long-winded tirade

Shahrazad Ali, controversial author of such books as "The Blackman's Guide to Understanding the Blackwoman" and "How Not to Eat Pork (Or Life without the Pig)," offers us this supposed survival guide for Black people living in the USA. Using her Nation of Islam-influenced beliefs, the author quizzes the reader about how one lives in the USA. The book is presented in the form of a multiple-choice test, and one's score, from answering the various questions about history, lifestyle, and culture, determines whether the reader is living as a slave. Unfortunately, this book is laughable at best.

Ms. Ali provides no evidence whatsoever to back up her claims. She presents her material as fact--without a single bit of research--and yet she drops the names of such classical Afrocentric thinkers as Molefi Kete Asante and Cheikh Anta Diop. Do not confuse Ali's anger with scholarship. The Nation of Islam and other Black nationalist organizations must not be mistaken for Afrocentricity, a legitimate philosophical discipline.

Furthermore, while Ms. Ali attempts to be universal with her beliefs, it is evident that this form of writing is a most American phenomenon, in both flavor and presentation. If you are interested in classical Afrocentric philosophy and scholarship, there are many books available, including those of the authors mentioned above, that will satisfy your curiostity.

Don't Waste Your Time!

This book continues Sharazad Ali's sad tradition of whacked out, mean spirited pseudoscience and pseudohistory that appeals only to extremely bitter and half educated African-American social rejects looking for an outlet for their misdirected anger.
Essentially, the book is a series of quizzes that imply that any Black American who has any positive encounter with Whites are still slaves. One particularly outrageous Q&A states that any Black person who laughes at a White man's joke is still a slave (so does this mean that I belong in the cotton patch for laughing at Jakcie Gleason and the Honeymooners)?
A good subtitle of this book (as well as Sharazad's other epics of nonsense) should be "The Miseducation of a Negro" (with apologies to Carter G. Woodson).
