As good as I thought it would be

Sons of The Buddha is at least as good as I thought it would be/had been lead to believe that it was. It is interesting to learn about the early lives of the three monks (Ajahns Buddhadasa, Panya and Jumnien). In this respect it is very similar to Kamala Tivayanich's first book "Forest Recollections". It differs in that it isn't as academic in tone, nor is it searching for answers.
Where this book fails is in the treatment of the monks. I know it is bad form for a Thai to in any way be seen to criticise or contradict Sangha, but I found some of the abilities these monks attributed to themselves as children more than a little hard to believe. Given that Ajahns Buddhadasa, Panya and Jumnien are the "pride and joy" of their communities, I think that objectivity never entered the scene.
I would like Kamala to follow "Sons of the Buddha" with an equivalent on Ajahns Chah, Mun and Dtun.

Wonderful and readable source about life in Siam/Thailand

This book is a treat. It is full of valuable history and is truly an enjoyable read. More than a book on Buddhism, Sons of the Buddha provides great insight into village life in Thailand's middle south in the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. It uses the childhood recollections of three prominent monks to illustrate the sometimes hard-knocks education that young people acquired in the coastal villages. I used sections on medicine, boxing, and fishing for a course I teach on Thailand's history. My students enjoyed them immensely. They liked the narrative forms of each chapter, which read a lot like short stories. You don't have to be interested in Buddhism -- or even know much about it -- to appreciate this book. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about Thailand's past, especially its rural past.

Wonderful, if uncritical, account of 3 revered thai monks childhood.

Not a book endowed with rigorous critical scholarship, but well researched biographically. It will be a treat to everyone with an interest in thai culture and the lives of some of its most popular and endearing monks. Missing, and the title warns us so, is an account of their lives and teachings after having become recognized teachers and temple masters.

I look forward the next opus from this author, one of the very few, dedicated to the historiography of Thai Theravada Buddhism in the Modern Times, with an emphasis on the biographical elements of its most valuable and revered exponents.

A very useful text for a one-semester course that is also great for the general reader

This book was designed to provide materials for a one semester course in historical geology for both majors and non-majors. Its nineteen chapters focus on three themes: Plate Tectonics, Physical and Biological History (the history of Earth's physical features, systems, and the life forms that have inhabited it), and Evolution. The authors have done a very good job in making the text readable and I believe it can be read enjoyably and to great benefit by an interested general reader outside of class. At least I found it fascinating and informative. The text uses photos, diagrams, charts, and all kinds of illustrations to enhance the reader's understanding of what is being said. There is also a useful CD to supplement the text. And Thomson has provided a website with even more things to read and do.

Each chapter provides an outline of what is going to be discussed, a bulleted set of chapter objectives, an introduction, and the chapter materials. The intra-chapter material is presented to questions asked in the headings of each section. The chapters also have little boxes entitled "What Would You Do?" that try to ask practical questions about real life issues that are related to the material being discussed. Each chapter ends with a bulleted Summary section, a list of important terms (that usefully has the page number where that term was used) and review questions that are multiple choice and short essay types. There is also an Apply Your Knowledge section with a few problems for the student (reader) to think about and practically apply what has been learned in that chapter. Some also have Field Questions that ask questions about a photograph, figure or table provided or referred to in the text.

Chapters 1-4 lay out the systems in the Earth and how the changes its systems affect each other. They talk about the basic materials that make up the Earth, Plate Tectonics, and Geologic Time. Chapters 5 and 6 talk about Rocks, Fossils and how they fit into the time scale of the Earth - and a look at what sedimentary rocks are and how they record the history of life on Earth.

Chapters 7-9 talk about Evolution, its evidences, and early life during the Precambrian period (separate chapters for the Archean Eon and the Proterozoic Eon). Chapters 10-13 cover the Paleozoic. The Mesozoic is covered in Chapters 14 and 15, the Cenozoic in 16-18, and Chapter 19 covers Primate and Human Evolution.

Appendix A is a metric conversion chart, Appendix B lays out the classification of organisms, and Appendix C discusses mineral identification. There is a useful glossary and a helpful index. Between the glossary and index there is a page with the answers to each chapter's multiple choice questions.

This is an interesting, well written, and useful text that is useful for all readers interested in this subject and I am happy to recommend it.

Great text

This most recent edition includes an updated planetary system as well as an improved structure of the geologic time scale. It is, however, ridiculously expensive when compared to the older edition. In my opinion,I do not believe that it is worth the added cost.

A reasonably good textbook, but WAY overpriced

For a hundred and fifty bucks, a reader has a right to expect something REALLY spectacular in a textbook, and this one just doesn't provide the goods. It's a competent book, readable, well organized and quite well-illustrated, but technically shallow in most subject areas and (in my opinion) definitely not worth the asking price. If the book has been recommended to you elsewhere, try and pick it up used from one of the sellers listed on this site. (Don't pay more than eighty or ninety bucks, though, unless you absolutely need it for a class.)

My personal recommendation: "Evolution of the Earth" by Donald Prothero. About the same price, but I believe that it offers a more comprehensive presentation. (I'm willing to concede that I may be coming down too hard on Wicander's book, though; he may have intended it as a more general introduction.)

The Man Behind 007 & The Bio Behind the Myth

This biography is worth reading for two very good reasons:

The most obvious is to get a look at the man who created one of the greatest iconic figures of the 20th Century. "Bond, James Bond" is usually on every list of popular and enduring characters from the previous century and his simple introduction is normally cited as the most memorable movie line in cinema history. The 007 machine is still very much alive in the 21st Century with all of Fleming's adventures in print and the secret agent still drawing millions at the box office with last year's "Casino Royale."

The second fascinating reason for reading this biography is the author's frank and open access to Fleming's family and friends. A great deal is revealed through their interviews as well as their diaries and letters.

When I read through the reviews for the hardcover edition, I found some complaints about the constant name-dropping throughout the book, but that was their world. Ian's wife Ann seemed to live to socialize and while most of the names probably mean very little to most readers today, some still jump out--from mobsters like Lucky Luciano to real intelligence figures like Allen Dulles, former CIA boss.

This is a sharp, genuine look at Bond's creator after decades of mythmaking about the life of Ian Fleming.

As the quote on the cover says, "This is an exemplary biography, beautifully written, fast-paced and extremely perceptive."

overly long, tedious, not very readable

I had already read the John Pearson biography of Ian Fleming (Alias James Bond-The Life Of Ian FLeming.) when I picked up this Andrew Lycett biography. Because blurbs and reviews of this biography praised it for the access Lycett had, I was looking forward to something more about Fleming's internal life and motivations and more details and first-person accounts of the interesting experiences Fleming did have. I was severely disappointed.

In the Acknowledgements section of this book Lycett thanks Pearson "for material he collected for his book The Life of Ian Fleming." The influence of the Pearson material seems prevalent throughout. Pearson seems to have set the standard for the depth of investigation and the extent of informed speculation, and there are even trivialities that are related in such a way that it seems Lycett and Pearson were writing from the same material. In fact, I would go so far as to say that Lycett almost seems to have simply removed the whitewash from Pearson's book.

The whitewash is mostly related to sexual matters. For example, Pearson makes it clear that Fleming seduced many women, but Lycett relates the seduction of the wife of one Fleming's friends, soon after the marriage, in which Fleming was supposed to be best man. Likewise, Pearson surgically removed Blanche Blackwell from Fleming's life and obscured many unsavory facts about Fleming's wife Ann. Lycett puts these matters on display, but there is no probing of them for understanding. Fleming was involved with a number of Jewish women, made literary connections with progressives and communists, and lived by choice in Jamaica, but was pseudo-conservative, staunchly pro-British and pro-empire. How were all these things related in Fleming's psychology?

The parallels between the Pearson and Lycett biographies also extend to the things left out. Take, for example, the occult and homosexuality. Fleming's novel "Live and Let Die" makes his interest in these two topics clear. Pearson mentions in passing a personal connection with (bisexual occultist) Aleister Crowley. The book jacket to the Lycett mentions Fleming's interest in astrology. The Lycett book contains a quote from Fleming's wife Ann referring to his "homosexuality." But neither Pearson or Lycett discusses these connections with any depth. Astrology does not even appear in Lycett's extensive index, despite its appearance on the jacket.

On the flip side, as other Amazon reviewers have noted, Lycett's book suffers from an overabundance of useless detail. There are so many small ones--and Lycett writes so implicatively--that "important" facts are often glossed over. For example, in a web article, I found Lycett referring to Lisl Jokl as Fleming's first love, although that fact is totally lost in the biography. It's hard to understand what Lycett's motivation was in writing. There is no Fleming studies industry that is going to benefit from so much detail, and it is a mistake from a literary perspective. Contrary to what some other reviewers have written, Fleming did not live an interesting life. In fact, much of the book is filled with the tedium of betrayals, double-betrayals, law-suits, failed business ventures and the like. And the interesting parts, such as Fleming's dinner with JFK, are often given surprisingly little attention. Pearson dealt with all the boredom in Fleming's life by writing thematically rather than strictly chronologically, showing how Fleming's life influenced the James Bond novels. That was a much better technique.

Another drawback to Lycett's book is his scant use of quotation. Pearson quotes a paragraph from a doctor's report on Fleming's heart, whereas Lycett deals with the same episode by summarizing in his own words. That technique is fine for short and/or topically-oriented works, but in a "definitive biography" of great length, an author needs to let the cast speak in the their own voices as much as possible. This can get frustrating, as in Lycett's very meager treatment of Operation Golden Eye (of interest to 007 fans, of course): "His letter to [Admiral] Godfrey from the British Embassy on his return to Lisbon underlined his extraordinary autonomy and initiative." What? What did he write to Admiral Godfrey?

My sense is that most people who would be interested in reading this book would end up skimming large portions of it or getting bogged down and not finishing. Although I understand that the desire of 007 fans to ogle isn't justification for exposing people's lives in a biography, one has to ask why a biography of Ian Fleming would have been written were it not for 007. To my mind, although Lycett's book is large and, in some ways, more honest than Pearson's, a definitive biography of Ian Fleming is yet to be written.

The graphics are Great, BUT...

I FOR one am ONE of those people who have pictures IN my mind from reading the SORCERERS RING series of what each character should look like AND I feel awkward reading a picture BOOK because THE Authors version of Thor AND MY picture of Thor are sooooo different...BUT IT would be great FOR someone WHO has NOT already read the whole series..

The good, the bad, and the concerns ...

I have read a significant part of the text versions, I think I managed to get to book 5 or 6 before I had to walk away. That said the graphics seem ok, a bit dark on my paper-white, and a little hard to read due to fairly small screen, and less than perfect vision. I can zoom in which makes reading much easier, if more unwieldy as you have to scroll about, but not too bad with the touch screen technology.

My rating is for the graphics and not for the story, which can be reviewed on the text editions easy enough on Amazon.

My concern is that these graphic books will literally be published chapter to chapter, and we are talking about 17 or so books with many chapters in each book. If Rice uses the same model as the text books you will be paying $3-$4 per chapter, for a story that will get very repetitive, very quickly. On the plus side this gives Rice the opportunity to correct spelling and grammar issues which plagues the authors works across many if not all of the series.

So... I got this free on Bookbub... thank goodness... I wanted to like this book I really did... the fact that there are a large number of books in the series is always a plus! But alas... I just can't like this book. First and foremost... if I heard that so-and-so had an immediate connection with so-and-so one more time I was going to throw-up. "He was like a brother to me" "He was like a father to me" " I fell in love with her more deeply that the deepest ocean" OK that last one I made up but it was almost as gaggy... I realize this is a YA book but, I like to think that the reading youth of today are a little more sophisticated than this. The plot was fast moving... a bit break neck but it was also all over the place... alas it is just not a book I can recommend to ... well... anyone

Just a bunch of quotes

I thought I was going to be getting an actual book with a lot of good arguments, backed up by political insight and observations. But it turns out, this book is just a compilation of a bunch of Ann Coulter's quotes from previous articles, books, or lectures. I read about half the book, then got bored from brain destimulation. For my first Coulter book, this was a big disappointment.

Very well done, of course. It's Ann Coulter! It's very witty and I love that she's reading the book herself. It doesn't flow as much as her other books because as she has said, "It's more of a quote book." So it's very funny quotes here and there for the conservative republican that needs a good honest laugh while hearing the truth!

Not a real book: buy her other works

I'm probably Ann's biggest fan, but this is not a real book. It is a collection of quotations from her earlier books and other sources. While the idea of providing her enemies a reference volume so they can quote her more accurately is fun, it makes for dull reading. The best parts are the introductions to each section that are new materal.
